Seven Labourers Killed in Soil Collapse at Signature Global's Sidhrawali Construction Site; FIR Filed, Work Halted
Tragedy at Signature Global Sidhrawali: Seven Workers Die in Soil Collapse
The incident occurred on Monday evening at the Signature Global Society in Gurugram's Sidhrawali area, where seven labourers were killed and four others, including three Nepalese men, were injured when a mound of soil collapsed on them at the construction site.
The Collapse and Immediate Aftermath
Construction work of a sewerage treatment plant (STP) was ongoing when a mound of soil suddenly collapsed, and some labourers — around 12-15 — got trapped under the debris. Upon receiving information, a police team from the Bilaspur Police Station, Gurugram, along with State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel reached the site and rescued the labourers, rushing them to a nearby hospital at Bhiwadi in Rajasthan, where seven of them were declared dead.
Arrests and Criminal Investigation
The project in-charge and site in-charge have been arrested. An FIR in connection with the incident has been registered under BNS sections 105 (deals with punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others). District officials formed an inquiry committee amid allegations of inadequate labour safety measures.
The family of one of the deceased has alleged that the labourers were not provided with adequate safety measures at the construction site. In a formal complaint, it was alleged that the construction company, the contractor, the project-in-charge, the site structure-in-charge, and the safety-in-charge officer failed to provide adequate safety arrangements and safety equipment, which led to the accident caused by the soil collapse, resulting in the deaths of the complainant's brother and the other labourers.
Safety Violations Documented
Labour Department officials noted that the excavation was about 30 feet deep, with banks that were undercut and vulnerable to landslides. Part of the boundary wall had fallen into the excavation, with undercutting continuing below the remaining wall at several points, and pillars left hanging without support in some places—conditions that could cause casualties.
Construction Work Halted
Haryana's Labour Department has issued an order and prohibited carrying out further construction work of the building at the site under the project M/s Signature Global India Pvt Ltd, at village Sidhrawali, NH-8 Gurugram, "till the safe working conditions are restored". Work could resume only after safe conditions were restored, with the department stating the direction was meant to reduce risks to workers.
