Signature Global's ESG Rating Downgraded to 65 by NSE Sustainability Following Sidhrawali Site Accident
ESG Rating Downgrade Follows Site Safety Incident
Signature Global (India) Limited disclosed on May 1, 2026, via regulatory filing to BSE Limited and National Stock Exchange of India Limited that NSE Sustainability Ratings & Analytics Limited has revised the company's ESG rating to 65 for FY25. The downward revision represents a significant contraction from an initial ESG rating of 70 for FY24-25 received earlier in 2026.
The revision was triggered by assessment of a construction site incident, with the rating agency conducting the voluntary revision based on publicly available information without being formally appointed by the company.
The March 2026 Incident
On March 13, 2026, a soil mound collapse at a Signature Global project in Gurugram killed seven labourers and injured four. The collapse occurred at Signature Global Society in the Sidhrawali area.
Excavation work for a sewerage treatment plant was ongoing when a mound of soil suddenly collapsed, trapping approximately 12–15 labourers. Officials indicated deaths appeared linked to asphyxiation.
Regulatory Response and Contractor Accountability
Following the incident, authorities issued notices to the developer regarding site safety protocols. Signature Global then issued a show-cause notice to its contractor, citing alleged negligence.
Haryana's Labour Department issued an order halting work at the building site, barring further construction under the project at village Sidhrawali, NH-8, with work permitted to resume only after safe conditions were restored. An assistant director of Industrial Safety and Health inspected the site and noted the excavation was approximately 30 feet deep with undercut banks where landslides were possible.
Implications for Institutional Investors
The revised ESG score could lead institutional investors and lenders to scrutinize Signature Global's risk management and sustainability practices more closely. The company had debuted in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark in October 2025, achieving an overall score of 84, underscoring a broader tension between sustainability ratings from different assessors.
ESG ratings are increasingly critical for real estate developers, influencing investor perception, access to capital, and corporate governance assessments.
